Spring has sprung, and with it comes construction season. If you’re thinking about a skilled job in the construction sector, it’s the perfect time to dip your toe into the industry.

The continually growing sector is packed with opportunities for first timers and experienced workers alike. To help those new to the industry, we prepared this guide to the most in-demand construction jobs in 2023.

Why are construction workers in high demand right now?

The primary cause of the high demand for construction workers is a demographic shift in the workforce. As baby boomers retire, they are leaving behind a high volume of open roles to be filled by younger workers.

On top of the demographic pressures, there’s increased demand for new construction across the country right now in response to the ongoing housing crisis. As governments and companies work to keep up with demand, a more new work is becoming available for skilled workers in the sector.

What are the most in-demand construction jobs right now?

Here’s our list of some of the top in-demand roles in the industry right now.

Welder

Welders are responsible for fabricating and putting together metal parts on a construction site. As a welder, you operate a variety of tools and equipment, and you’re also in charge of measuring and planning layouts. On top of building core welding skills, you learn to interpret blueprints, master various working styles, and tackle basic math.

In addition to being in high demand across Canada, welders enjoy high job satisfaction and opportunities to work on diverse projects.Outside of construction season, your skills as a welder can be applied to roles in a range of other industries, including manufacturing, oil and gas, mining, aerospace, and transportation.

Masonry Worker

Masonry workers are integral for most construction projects, as they are required to build the literal foundation for structures. These professionals are responsible for laying bricks, concrete, stone, and other similar materials for walls, foundations, walkways, and more.

Like most trades, new masonry workers can expect to receive on-the-job training, although getting additional training and certifications can help you get an edge over other applicants for masonry roles. To succeed as a mason, you should feel confident reading and interpreting blueprints, and it’s also vital to be physically fit, as lifting heavy materials is a key element of the job.

Construction Project Manager

If you’re a great planner with strong leadership skills, the role of construction project manager might be an ideal fit.

Construction project managers oversee a construction project from start to finish, establishing the budget, assigning resources, supervising workers, and ensuring everything is finished on schedule. In this role, you’ll spend a significant amount of time on-side monitoring activities, as well as time meeting with stakeholders, preparing reports, and reviewing finances.

Although this role typically requires experience and training, the pay is also greater. If you’ve worked in construction for years already and you’re ready to take the next step in your career, working towards a project manager role might be a great option.

Heavy Equipment Operator

Heavy equipment operators in the construction industry are responsible for the use of machines such as bulldozers, compactors, excavators, forklifts, tractors, and more. Job responsibilities in this role vary depending on the company, but operators are typically expected to understand how to inspect their equipment, perform routine maintenance, conduct essential safety procedures, and execute minor repairs.

As one might expect, equipment operator jobs each require special certifications and licensing to use the machines. Depending on the role, they may also be required to work under adverse conditions, including suboptimal weather or terrain.

Plumber

It likely comes as no surprise that plumbers are in high demand for most construction projects. Plumbers have specialized skills that make them indispensable in the industry—meaning that the role is a great option for secure, consistent employment. It’s an ideal field for those who enjoy understanding structures and systems, and don’t mind collaborating with other industry professionals such as electricians and contractors.

Although plumbers are always in demand, investing in extra training and even working toward becoming a master plumber can be worthwhile in this field, as development usually leads to better roles and higher pay.

HVAC Technician

HVAC technicians install, maintain, and repair the heating, cooling, and ventilation systems in buildings, making them essential workers in the construction industry. The role requires good problem-solving skills and an ability to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, from sales teams and engineers to contractors and customers.

A career in HVAC is a great opportunity to build a range of skills, including measuring and cutting pipes, planning systems, reading blueprints, welding, and troubleshooting.

Solar Photovoltaic Installer

The trend toward sustainable energy in construction is continuing to grow year over year. As this field expands, it’s a great idea to get in on the ground floor as a solar panel installer, knowing that demand for this type of work is projected to increase for years to come.

Solar photovoltaic installers mount panels on the rooftops of commercial, residential, and industrial buildings to supplement or even replace other energy sources. On top of understanding how to install the product, workers are responsible for planning and customizing system configurations based on the needs of the customer, weather-proofing panels, and testing and maintaining the system as needed. They should be comfortable working outdoors, as well as in attics and small spaces.

The bottom line

Now is a great time to get into the construction industry—or to embark on the next step of your construction career. With demand for new builds increasing and the use of sustainable building techniques on the rise, upgrading your skills and entering one of these in-demand roles can be the beginning of a rewarding career in the industry.
